At the heart of Ghent Mun 2018

At the heart of Ghent Mun 2018

This sunny day of April marks the beginning of a special session of the Gent Model United Nations. Why special? Because it is the first time that such event is organized in Gent! Although the city is modest in size, it holds endless secrets, beautiful historic places, warm people and refined restaurants.

Most importantly, this GhentMUN 2018 is honoured to host a united, diverse and determined group of people who will debate throughout the weekend. Our delegates come from Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia, but what unites them all is the strong desire to communicate and learn from their different cultures. They’re passionate about current affairs, history, about sharing ideas and  meeting different perspectives.

If you ask most delegates, they’ll probably tell you that once you start with MUN discussions, you’re not ready to stop. Why are they so dedicated? It is hard work! But the rewards are incredible. Such experience enables you to get out of your comfort zone, to speak in public, write resolutions, cooperate, support strong views, listen and respect one another.

But there is more to it. Each and every one of us can embody a vigorous and hopeful youth, ready to stand for what we think, want, and believe in. Having grown up in a world teared up by several major crises, we may feel the urge to change direction. To envision a world with more coherence towards the environment, gender equality, poverty or education issues. Hence, we are also here to commonly develop our understanding of this complex and fascinating world. Because ultimately, it will feed our conviction that it is possible to find another way. That we are the next ones and that we will be as active and united as possible to turn projects into reality. To make the SDG goals more than a colourful framework.

In the end, we gather here because we feel concerned. We feel involved. We feel we can have a voice. And like a drop in the ocean, we jointly add our contribution in the grand scheme. Powerful words and melodious notes started this week-end, setting the bar high. And it will be memorable!
